Jazz in the Garden update

The Memorial Hall Committee would like to thank all those brave people who, despite the ‘iffy’ forecast, attended the Jazz in the Garden but we were lucky again and had a lovely warm evening. Everyone seemed to enjoy their splendid picnics & danced to the excellent sounds of the Ad Hoc Jazz Band & their singers Alison & Ruth. We finished the evening with fireworks. Thank you all those who helped set up & put away and also the strawberry hulling team who waded through 70 punnets & on;y tasted a few! Our thanks again to the sponsors of the band John Earle & Sons & Lodders and to Art in Henley who paid for the fireworks. We shall now be able to replace all the windows in the Memorial Hall making them draught proof & maintenance free.

Rotary Recognition for Keith & Alec

Two Henley Rotarians, Keith Ford and Alec Halliwell, have been honoured by Rotary International in recognition of more than 25 years of dedicated Rotary membership. The "Commitment to Service" awards were presented to them by club president Paul Rayner who, in congratulating them, said that their contribution to the Henley club could not be overstated. Both were founder members of the club when it was formed 30 years ago, and both are not only past presidents but also continue to be highly involved in all the club's activities serving the community.

Preparations are now well under way for the club's charity golf day to be held on Friday 9th September at Stratford Oaks Golf Club. Applications for teams of four to enter this AM/AM event are available from Mike Redman (01926-843060 or e-mail Wellsider@aol.com). The cost of £140 includes an excellent buffet meal. Good prizes are on offer, including prizes for mixed and ladies teams. The main charity to benefit is the Prostate Cancer Charity. With 27,000 men in the UK diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and 10,000 deaths - one every hour - annually, it's no wonder that the charity needs all the funds it can muster to fund research and provide support for those touched by the disease. Do join us at our golf day if you can, or support us by providing sponsorship of a hole on the course. Prizes for the raffle would also be most welcome.
